The last time I heard internally about why we do not have water is that it has to do with the PS3. It is most likely a memory budget problem. However, I do not know the exact technical reason. Only that it had something to do with the PS3. |

In this (now famous ) picture, http://web.ccpgamescdn.com/dust/news.control/65075/1/picture3.pngtaken from Corp Tax DEV Blog, i can see a delta wing airplane silhouette (right behind and between "CONTRACT INCOME" and "BATTLE EXPERIENCE" frames) flying above a water like looking surface. Is it taken from test map or static picture made by your artists? Or am i writing BS
Testmap. |

So I am not the "tech / programmer" guy who knows this stuff. =)
However, obviously other games have water. But other games are not using our engine. And while our engine is based on Unreal 3 technology (NOT UDK), we have highly modified it. Our terrain system is not even Unreal's original terrain system. So obviously it has to do with a combination of our tech and the ps3. I only mentioned what I heard folks. |

Is it a map that is being tested prior to release or your private map for testing stuff? C'mon tell us. The beans have already been spilled Thanx for your generosity with providing info to us :thumbup
It's just some testmap mostly programmers and game designers use... to test things. It typically has all sorts of technical broken rules in it. It is something that would never be released. |

It wouldn't really be any fun hehe. Imagine driving around on lots of flat terrains, and broken ancient old sockets, and water planes with no water physics under them, etc etc. Sure might be fun for some, but I could see that getting boring really fast. I also don't think you would be able to call in vehicles. It needs to have a navmesh built for that (for the RDV).
I do know the joys of goofing around in developer testmaps for a few hours though. I do that with other games I own once in a great while. |

I assume you are talking about the rogue holes that showed up in a map. That was a stray single pixel in the heightmap, outside of a play area. An extremely unexpected thing, especially that it turned into a literal "hole". Normally you have a issue like that the stray pixel translates to just a super deep hole down to a narrow point that you get stuck in. Not a actual hole that falls out of the entire world. |

My HP began to drop quickly. Is that place with liquid physics or just kind of "hologram material" with HP penalty? Can't find this structure on any map now. But i bet i saw this once on Spine Crescent Ambush map. It had yellow/green/translucent hue to it... But I didn't jump into it that time. I think it's at Manus Peak Skirmish map @L12 (something green there) http://web.ccpgamescdn.com/newssystem/media/64656/1/ManusPeak_skirmish.jpg
You are probably thinking of large outpost that has it which would be Biomass, also a couple of small sockets have it. They have physics volumes that cause damage but no under water effects. It's just a material on a plane. Not a "real" water system basically. |

Why not use the same technique for small shallow lakes and stuff? We don't need to be able to swim through it, it doesn't need to be deep, just something to add some visual variety.
I don't have an answer to that. I could see a water being used in our background meshes / moods. It's not really my call though. Ive asked several times about water. I am sure it will happen eventually. I just don't know when. |
